Okay, what do you do when the seasons are changing and you want your home to reflect the current season? You can go shopping at the local department store and break the bank with just a couple throw pillows or you get creative and make your own to stay on budget. One of the hardest things when decorating your home can be staying within your budget. No matter how small, there are things you can do to dress up your home without spending too much. <\/span><\/p>\n

I wanted to make sure my home was cozy and inviting this winter. One of my favorite looks are the knitted throw pillows. Unfortunately, I had trouble finding any that were affordable or any at all for that matter. After searching in a couple stores and online I remembered that I could just make my own. Hello, right? Why I didn’t think of it sooner, I have no idea. It’s been done many times and I knew it would be a much cheaper option. <\/span><\/p>\n

All you need to make your own are old sweaters! If you don’t have any on hand that you want to use, search your local thrift store. I found several, all with great patterns and in great condition at a thrift store.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

I brought them home, washed and dried them according to their labels. I then cut the sweater into a square just below the neck line, cutting off the arms. You can then turn the back and front of the squares inside out and sew leaving 1\/4″-1\/2″ as sewing allowance on each side. You can add a zipper, or insert your pillow form and finish stitching up the bottom.<\/span><\/p>\n

The buttoned cardigan ended up being my favorite. It was the easiest of the pillows to make. I simply sewed all four sides up and put my pillow insert in through the front and then buttoned it back.<\/span><\/p>\n

This sweater had a zipper front. I just used the back of the sweater and sewed a linen like fabric that I had on hand to the backside of the pillow.<\/span><\/p>\n

I love how pillow covers are one of the easiest things to make on your own. They make a big impact and the possibilities are endless. I’ve been finding it harder and harder to buy throw pillows. Every time I find a cute one in the store I think, I could make that!\u00a0<\/em>In case you’re wondering the best place I have found affordable down pillow inserts is Ikea<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
