What was once a dark and dirty space is now a bright and inspiring home office! I’m pleased to say that today we’re finally sharing my classic & subtle office reveal.\u00a0<\/em><\/h3>\n

We’re taking a little break from the fall posts today because It’s time for a room reveal! It’s been almost four years since we bought our colonial fixer upper and we’ve been working little by little, room by room to get it just the way we envisioned. I’m so excited today because I finally get to share my new favorite place in our home, my office! Grab your coffee, settle in and lets take a look back at the space right after we purchased our house.<\/p>\n

It’s the smallest of the bedrooms but has the most beautiful natural light. It has a beautiful view and I knew that it would make for an inspiring space to work in. My office has been years in the making. It’s a room that has moved twice and as taken quite a lot of time to get just right. I knew the feeling that I wanted the space to have and the function it needed but getting it to that place hasn’t been easy.<\/p>\n

Not too long after we moved in I decided to switch rooms with our guest bedroom because the room was larger. It was only a few weeks before I realized that though the first room was smaller it just felt brighter and more cozy. I quickly switched the rooms back and made plans to get my office just the way I wanted it. It’s been over a year since then but here we are and I’m so over the moon with the result.\u00a0 For years I dreamed of having a space just like this one, so although it’s not perfect, it’s the perfect office for me.<\/p>\n

I struck gold at the Pottery Barn outlet one afternoon. I purchased both sides of my desk for just $25 each! The paint was peeling in places and it was missing it’s top but those things made no difference to me. I knew that with a little work it could be great. I brought them home and I placed them on the wall just where I wanted them, found the wall studs and I attached them to the wall from inside the drawers using wood screws. I made sure to remove the baseboard first so that I could wrap it around the base of the desk easily. I used a sheet of smooth plywood we had on hand and attached it with screens to the drawer bases.<\/p>\n

I installed a sheet of bead board above and used basic wooden shelf brackets from Home Depot to make a shelf at the top for extra storage. I also decided to build a window seat with storage to hold my sewing machine and fabrics. I’m heart broken because I photographed the process in order to share with you but was unable to get the photos off of my old computer. If we’re ever able to recover them I’ll be sure to share that how-to. It took me just an afternoon and evening to do using just 2×4’s, plywood, and trim. You can certainly find a number of simple tutorials on Pinterest as well.<\/p>\n

I love the result! It was very affordable, especially considering the deal that I got on the desk. It took some time to get into place and to sand and paint but it was well worth it.<\/p>\n

I chose a warm white for the walls – Simply White by Benjamin Moore and I knew I wanted to a soft green for the desk and trim. I went through several green sample colors but quickly chose by Svelte Sage by Sherwin Williams. It’s a soft, almost sage green. Its the perfect balance of neutral with a soft pop of color.<\/p>\n

I love using baskets for extra storage. These hold gift wrapping supplies, wallpaper and fabric samples.<\/p>\n

I made the window shade myself. It’s a simple tension rod shade, nothing fancy. I’ll share more how to make your own in another post soon.<\/p>\n

The secretaries desk holds all of my design books, Charlie’s school books and puzzles. The striped armchair was a facebook yard sale find for only $25. It’s in great condition and looks as though it was never used. I call it Charlie’s chair. It’s his go-to spot when he’s hanging with me while I’m working.<\/p>\n

Working from home can be challenging at times when it comes to shutting the door and actually leaving work for the next day but I know how special it is to be able to do so. Having a nice place to do just that is the icing on the cake! When I’m thinking of new projects or writing a blog post or editing photos I’m right here getting it all done. It has quickly become one of my favorite places in our home!<\/p>\n
