For 5 years I have been trying different recipes to get my Specula’s to hold their design while baking. Every year I would be so excited then so disappointed when I pulled them from the oven. Your recipe worked!!!!!!! Thank you so, so much! I will be using it for years to come!

Hello. I made the Dutch speculous cookies and while they held their shape, the fine detail did not stick, they smoothed out. What am I doing wrong?

In Germany, they disappear shortly after the Christmas season. The name Spekulatius comes from the Latin word ‘Specculum,’ or mirror, since the carved molds create a mirror image onto the cookie dough. Another really fun fact is when placed in a row next to each other in the correct order, the Spekulatius images tell the story of Saint Nicholas. Thank you for sharing these cookies with everyone Amanda! Speculaas or Spekulatius as we call them in Germany have a very long history and tradition.
