Over the years we continued collecting and acquiring numerous ones as gifts made from everything imaginable including blown glass, clay, porcelain, wood, and tin. My mother-in-law gifted us a Hallmark rocking horse every year with the date on it. When my husband passed away at the age of 41, (our children were 13 & 10 yrs old) I decorated the tree one last time with the ornaments. When the time came to take down the tree I bought two lovely boxes from Michael’s and carefully wrapped the ornaments in tissue paper equally dividing them between the boxes. When our children eventually set up homes of their own I gifted each one a box of carefully chosen ornaments that I had boxed away. It’s a funny thing how much sentiment a small ornament can hold, but that’s the joy in reconnecting to them each year. Your son’s tree is beautiful. Treasure it.

I’m looking forward to having grandchildren soon so I can create a fun and whimsical tree for them. I bet you saw that Merry Christmas banner and said, “oh yes, you’re going home with me!” I would have!!

My oldest son made it in Sunday School when he was two or three. I offered it to him once after he was married and he told me he didn’t think he was mature enough yet (he was at least 35) to take good care of it, so it still proudly hangs on the front of my tree every year. I sent a few antique ornaments that were always our younger son’s favorites to him, but his wife wouldn’t put them on the tree, so I still cherish them myself too.

I have been buying an ornament every year for over 20 years for my grandaughter and grandson for their own trees someday. Hope they ring good memories for them someday. A lovely idea to do.

Oh wow! I love that! To look back at each one takes you back to that time, even for just a moment. I know those must be so special to you and him! I can totally relate to your feelings on son moving out. I’m not looking forward to those days quite yet, although I know they still hold so much joy. Don’t you wish you could slow some days with your son down? I guess we gotta soak up every moment while we can. Thank you so much for sharing! I love hearing what others do in their homes this time of the year. Merry Christmas!

When Charlie takes his ornaments to his own home one day there will be many memories he’ll cherish. His room is so cute! I love that he has a collection of nutcrackers too. I started one years ago for my now 17 year old grandson. He and I had an after school “date” a few weeks ago and, while I was afraid he had outgrown the nutcracker stage, he wanted to pick one out for his collection this year. I was happy to oblige!
I am so enjoying all the photos you are sharing during this Christmas season, your home is simply lovely!

Thank you so much! The duvet cover is from Ikea, several years ago and the quilt and sham is from Garnet Hill Kids.
